No Need to Suffer Seasonal Allergies!

It may be difficult to believe it is spring and summer is just around the corner! After a long winter we look forward to warmer weather, mowing lawns instead of shovelling snow, and sun block instead of snow suits. For many people, however, the warmer weather also means the start of seasonal allergies.

Most of us look forward to spending more time outdoors, while many others are preparing to deal with itchy and watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, even rashes and hives. Commonly referred to as “hay fever”, seasonal allergies are an overactive response by the immune system to allergens, such as pollen, dust, and grasses. This year, instead of reaching for your usual allergy medications, which offer varying degrees of effectiveness and possible side effects, why not give Homeopathy a try.

Homeopathy offers a natural approach without side effects that actually helps reduce sensitivities to allergies over time. Homeopathic remedies are selected for each person based on their distinctive symptoms, rather than the allergens causing them. There are two options when it comes to using Homeopathy for treating allergies: (1) acute treatment or; (2) constitutional treatment as part of over health management.

Acute Treatment of Seasonal Allergies

Acute treatment is intended to treat allergy symptoms without addressing other health concerns. This approach is useful when suffering from acute allergies or for those with a knowledge of homeopathy wishing to treat themselves at home. This approach is intended for short-term or temporary treatment, as the underlying causes of allergies are not addressed. With home treatment, if there is no improvement within 3-4 doses reassess the symptoms and select a different remedy that more closely matches your symptoms. Take a look at a few of the more commonly used seasonal allergy remedies.

Allium Cepa – The symptoms indicating use of this remedy are similar to those associated with the red onion it is derived from – watery discharges from the eyes and nose. The eyes burn, sting, and swell but the tears do not irritate the skin around them. The discharge from the nose, however, does irritate the skin, especially around the nostrils and upper lip. There may also be sneezing, rawness of the throat, and increased thirst. Many people will find their symptoms worse indoors or in warm rooms, and better in open air.

Euphrasia – Similar to Allium Cepa there is much sneezing with watery eyes and nose. Unlike Allium Cepa, however, the water from the eyes burns the cheeks while the discharge from the nose doesn’t. The discharge from the eyes may form a thick, sticky mucus. Symptoms are worse in the sunlight and wind, with sneezing worse at night.

Arsenicum Album – Think of this remedy when watery discharges from both the eyes and nose are burning. There is often burning or itching of the eyes, nose, or throat. There may also be increased thirst for warm drinks (despite warm weather) and an itch in the nose not relieved by sneezing. People needing this remedy may find improvement with warm applications to the face and may be sensitive to light.

Sabadilla – This remedy is characterized by repeated fits of sneezing, usually with multiples sneezes at a time, along with a nose that “runs like a tap”. Sneezes can be brought on by fragrances, even the quick sniff of a flower, and are preceded by a tickling sensation in the nose. The eyes may be red and burning with watery discharge. There may also be dryness of the mouth without thirst.

Apis Mellificia – This remedy provides great relief for swelling, burning, itching, or stinging pains due to allergic reaction. The areas most affected are the eyes and skin. The irritation of the eyes may present with redness, burning, itching, swelling of the eyelids, and blurred or smoky vision. On the skin there may be hives or rashes with redness, swelling, and intense itch. The skin may also feel hot to the touch and feels better with cold applications. This is also a great remedy to keep on hand for sunburns and insect bites or stings.

Constitutional Treatment of Allergies

Due to the complex nature of constitutional treatment a trained Homeopath is needed for effective use of this approach. Allergies are one aspect of the deeper imbalance in health. Using the constitutional approach a trained Homeopath will assess allergy symptoms in conjunction with other health issues – physical, mental, and emotion. Looking at the overall health of the individual a remedy is selected to treat allergies along with other health issues. This holistic approach addresses underlyinghealth issues to provide long lasting results, helping to prevent allergies from recurring year after year.
