The Holidays are over and the New Year is upon us; all the indulgences over the past few weeks mixed with the cold, harsh winter weather has left us vulnerable to pathogen invasion. Most people refer to them as Colds and Flus. The flu, often called “influenza”, can cause a variety of symptoms and can often be the cause of more serious complications. People with the flu often experience sore throat, cough, muscle aches, extreme fatigue, fever, runny nose and watery eyes. Nausea and vomiting are commonly seen in children. Flu-related complications can occur at any age, those with chronic health problems, in specific heart or lung conditions, are much more likely to develop serious complications. The best way to avoid influenza is to PREVENT it.

We prevent by;

Strengthening the body’s resistance to invasion (known as Wei Qi in Chinese Medicine). Balancing the body’s internal system for optimal functioning Tonifying imbalances within that may make one vulnerable to disease. Nourishing Blood and Qi (pronounced CHEE; vital life force) as a first line defence.

Acupuncture can help rebalance energy, regulate the Qi and stimulate the immune system. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that acupuncture and herbal medicine (herbs such as Astragalus and many others) can reduce the occurrence of upper respiratory tract infection and in turn shorten the length of time one is ill. When you get sick with the flu, do not wait. Start acupuncture treatments in the early stages. It may help eliminate pathogenic factors. For those that are needle shy, Low-Level Intensity Laser Therapy (LILT) may be used to stimulate Acu. points. Laser Acupuncture is used to stimulate acupuncture points using the same rules of point selection as needle acupuncture. Laser acupuncture may be used on its own or in combination with needles, dietary recommendations, herbals and life-style techniques.

A Few Tips For Surviving Flu Season:

  • Keep warm. Make sure your neck and chest are protected from wind, and cold. Use a scarf around your neck when going outside and wear turtle-neck shirts or sweaters. The neck is an area where wind can invade the body and cause sickness. The TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) perspective is that wind invasions make people more vulnerable to colds and flu.
  • Chicken soup is often recommended because it adds extra water and expels mucous to help you get rid of the illness. A sufficient amount of water is important as it helps to flush symptoms out of our bodies. Carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, garlic and tomatoes are high in beta-carotene. Eating lots of them during the flu season may help you avoid illness, or recover sooner.
  • Get Acupuncture. When you get regular acupuncture treatments (as little as once per month) it actually boosts your immune system. Acupuncture strengthens the “Wei Qi” or the protective energy this acts as a barrier against illness. It is possible for us to resist illness during this winter season. So, go enjoy yourselves to the fullest. You have my best wishes in staying health.
