It’s summer! Let’s hear it for Happy feet!

Posted on May 25, 2010 in News

For me the Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the seasons’ hikes. This year’s trek was wonderful but left me limping due to a nasty blister on my heel. I had been careful with my footwear, I’ve worn these hiking boots many times with no ill effects. What was different? It appears that the socks ( thin cotton) were the weak link.

When it comes to feet, apparently nothing can be taken for granted.
The editors of the Globe and Mail seem to share that perspective because today’s paper featured two articles on feet. In one, a runner, following a recent trend toward a more natural stride running barefoot, ran a 10 K marathon without shoes. The runner was simultaneously promoting the experience and bemoaning the painful consequences while promising to do better the following year.

In the second, two foot specialists provided suggestions for keeping feet happy during the summer. For those interested in the quick summary, Dr. Kathleen Stone and Stephen Hartman recommend: banning the flip-flop (except poolside) changing footwear often, treating toe infections such as fungi, staying clear of pedicures where the instruments are not steam-sterilized. They suggest that one use a cream on callused feet and refresh tired feet with cool water. Contrary to the running barefoot trend, Stone and Hartman state bare feet in a urban environment are a no-no.
