At our clinic, we treat patients who experience acute and chronic pain. We’ve learned a few things along the way. For many pain is a very debilitating presence in their life affecting their everyday activities and their ability to live their lives fully. Others are more resilient and seem to have personal resources that enable them to move forward with their lives seemingly against all odds.
An article by Kim Painter of USA Today, titled Your Health: Can Pain be Predicted ? sheds some light on these different responses to pain. New research has identified a gene that affects how we experience pain. Science is learning that the genetic component, in conjunction with cultural and social learned responses to pain, is responsible for the way pain is perceived. As research provides insight into the nature of pain, the possibility of varying treatment options for those living with pain and taking the steps to avoid situations causing pain for those susceptible are promising.
