A Special Kind of Gym…What’s in it for You?

Exercise for Core Strength St. John's Physiotherapy

Embrace that youthful feeling!!

You know the feeling! The energy and enthusiasm to live your full day; great mobility; solid baseline fitness from which to pursue exercise and recreational goals; better tolerance when you have to sit or stand too long; good organ function, such as bladder and digestive function. In short, few physical complaints, good head space and best possible health!

Good spinal alignment relieves the kinks which develop in nerves that are stretched or squished with poor spine and joint alignment; and restores their normal flow and function. In the mid back, this relieves pressure on the nerves which supply internal organs, impacting digestion, respiration and circulation. In the upper back and neck, involved nerves impact high blood pressure, the stress response, headache, foggy brain sensation, etc. In the low back, spinal stenosis and some incontinence presentations may result from nerve dysfunction; and in all areas neuropathies, such as sciatica, are associated with compromised nerve function.

The abdominal core is key to good posture. The abdominal core refers to muscles which attach to spine or pelvis, which have primary functions of spinal stabilization, transfer of force between shoulder and pelvic girdles and support of internal organs. The core muscles include your transverse abdominis, multifidus, internal and external obliques, erector spinae, diaphragm, pelvic floor muscles, and (of course) your abs, the rectus abdominis. When all these muscles are ‘’firing on all cylinders” they align and stabilize the shoulder girdle and pelvic girdle to provide an anchor for arm and leg movement; they provide stability and support to internal organs and optimize their function; spare the spine from excessive load; prevent injuries and enable our peak performance in all activities. With an intact core, you are well positioned to enjoy best health and all the activities you want.

Signs of a weak core include:

  • Low back pain
  • Poor posture
  • Poor balance
  • Low endurance for standing activities
  • Shortness of breath
  • General sense of weakness

At Avalon Laser Health we have chosen to make spinal alignment and core control an integral part of the care we provide. With the time constraints inherent in everyday practice, we too often found ourselves just giving lip service to core function and alignment, as we provided stretches and home exercise programs for specific muscle and joint issues, such as carpal tunnel and back strain. Too often, the quick introduction to core and alignment, was just too quick; our clients either couldn’t replicate the instructions or considered the extra work to be redundant and the result was suboptimal outcomes. Frustrating! It is only sensible that a good fix requires a good foundation, or core. To address this issue, we are introducing the Gym, a space for core exercise, posture restoration, and the fundamentals of good fitness.

This service is intended to augment whatever treatments you receive at ALH — physiotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture and/or laser therapy — and is available to all present and past clients who could benefit from alignment and core exercise. Considering that most muscle and joint pains either cause or create adaptation or changes within the muscle and joint system, best outcomes always include addressing associated muscle faults. This program will also qualify for the $2000 Physical Activity Tax Credit.
